1- exterior view of house: Houses were made from wood, or logs, because farmers didn't have a lot of money. They used logs because they could go cut the trees down anywhere. This was time consuming because they had to do a lot of work to cut all the branches off. The houses didn't have paint because that cost too much.
Interior View of House
INTERIOR VIEW OF HOUSE/ FIREPLACE AREA: Most houses had fireplaces like this to keep the house warm. Furnaces were not invented at this time. The shelves on the side of the fireplace could be used to store food, wood, and anything else. They would use the fireplaces to cook their food.
1-KITCHEN: The needed a long table to cut their meat, and they made bread to go with nearly every meal. The kettles hanging in the background could be used to carry and heat water for tea, cooking, and bathing. The posts are there instead of walls because walls cost more money to put up and it made it easier to heat every area. MEAT & BARREL STORAGE AREA: Houses would have small meat hanging rooms to help keep the meat cold. Without this area the meat may spoil. They would use their own animals to get meat once in a while. Sometimes they would go to the general store. The barrels would hold wine, rice, and grains.
Bedroom Furniture
1- BEDROOM: The mattresses were stuffed with straw instead of cotton. The ropes were used to support the mattress. When the bed started to sag, they would tighten the ropes. The floors are made out of lumber from logs, like the ones they used to build the outside of the house. The furniture would be a bed and maybe one dresser. There may also be a wooden chair or rocker in the room.
1: ALL PURPOSE ROOM/ LIVING ROOM AREA: This area in the house would be used for eating, gathering, meetings, and reading stories instead of watching tv like we do now. The floor is made out of wood like the rest of the house. The furniture is wooden as well. The walls would be plain, except for maybe a little decoration.
Small Cow Corral
SMALL ANIMAL CORRAL: Small farmers could often have many animals, or livestock.
The rock wall in this photo probably was created from rocks the farmer found while plowing fields.
These walls would be used to separate land.

Typical Barn
Wagon in Barn
1-TYPICAL SMALL FARM BARN: They put their wood in here, so they can use the wood for their stove or oven. They also put their wagon in here, if they have one. Some barns would also be used as a workshop for woodworkers, craftsman, and leather workers.
Slaughterhouse
1-slaughterhouse where local farmers would take livestock. Slaughterhouses were useful for farmers who didn't have the tools or time to do it themselves.
